René R. Alomá

Playwright/director Rene R. Aloma was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1947.  He studied fine arts at Wayne State University in Detroit and went on to receive an M.A. from the University of Windsor.  He also studied theatre design, directing and playwriting in London, England, New York, and Toronto.  His first play, Once a Family, won an Honourable Mention in the Clifford E. Lee Award competition in 1974 and went on to be produced by the Tarragon Theatre in 1975 and the Memphis Repertory Company in 1977.  His children's plays, including A Friend is a Friend, have been widely produced in the United States and Canada. His latest play, A Little Something yo Ease the Pain, winner of the Southampton university and the 1980 Smile Company Playwriting Competitions, was produced during the 1980-81 season by Toronto Arts Productions and in 1983 by Teatre Apolo in Caracas, Venezuela in its Spanish version, Siempre en mi corazón.  Aloma lived in New York where he was playwright-in-residence at INTAR.
