María Irene Fornés

Director, artistic director, costume designer, set designer, author / playwright, librettist, translator, adapter

She has lived in the United States since 1945 with an intermission in Paris between 1954 and 1957. She started working painting scarfs and has also been a costume designer. She has an ambivalent relationship with success: "[It] makes me feel I am now on the border of mainstream -- not quite in it. To be mainstream frightens me. Then people put claims on you and expect things of you. I've always liked being on the border." It is there, out in the fringe, where she finds her freedom. She writes and directs "not because it is my career but because I have to do it."
